Permissions explained

File and permissions help keeping your important files safe. If you're using linux/unix, it's important to know what they mean.

File permissions

  • Read: open and read the file.
  • Write: modify the file.
  • Execute: run the file as program.

Folder permissions

Watch out for folder permissions, they have a different meaning than the same bits on files!

  • Read: list folder contents.
  • Write: create, rename and remove files.
  • Execute: open/enter folder.
